New research from CP3's Tim Anderson, published today in JAMA, finds that more than half of U.S. adults ages 30 to 79 (about 87.5 million people) are now recommended for statins under updated cardiovascular guidelines, an increase of 21.5 million Americans.
The shift reflects a major change in how doctors assess risk: looking beyond 10 years to a person's risk over several decades. Anderson, who served on the committee that wrote the new guidelines, notes that this is a meaningful change for how clinicians counsel patients, particularly younger adults who may have low short-term risk but meaningful long-term risk.
