Drug Shortages: Improving the resiliency of the drug supply chain and access to medicines in short supply for older adults

Drug shortages have been declared a national security threat, and their impact is especially significant for older adults, who fill the majority of prescriptions in the U.S. and often depend on multiple medications to manage chronic conditions. Led by Katie J. Suda, PharmD, MS, this project launches the first conference series dedicated exclusively to drug shortages, bringing together researchers, health systems, drug manufacturers and distributors, payers, and professional organizations to share operational tools, research findings, and solutions. An expert panel will develop actionable recommendations to strengthen the resiliency of the drug supply chain and improve access to medications in short supply, disseminated through a white paper outlining the strengths, weaknesses, and trade-offs of each proposed solution. Funded by an NIH R13 award, the conference series builds on CP3's experience hosting well-received annual conferences and aims to establish a lasting platform for advancing the field of drug shortage research and practice.
